If you are interested in the idea of making money online I want to extend you a warm welcome. It’s nice in here.

One of the things you rarely hear when first you look into this Internet Marketing thing is a description of the numbers.

Right now there are 3 or 4 million people looking at the Internet Marketing (IM) world as a possible place for them to thrive. In bad times, even more.

They’re just looking! They do a lot of looking. Sometimes they buy!

It’s my opinion that in the IM world there is no competition! I say that because I feel there is such a huge amount of people looking to buy online that all we have to do is get a very tiny slice of that pie.

Remember Sam Walton? He said “A very small percentage of a really big number is still a big number.” I agree.

The already successful Internet Marketers that sell “the biz” are your competition IF you choose to market “Internet Marketing” itself.

While IM is a huge niche it doesn’t take anywhere near as much know-how to sell info products or physical products to some very large “other” markets.

Like “weight loss” and “credit” and “baldness” and “abs and “golf”. Those are huge markets that are far easier to break into.

I’m here in the Internet Marketing arena because I have been in marketing and sales for 40 years. I’m a natural. I love it and I have something to contribute to the total.

You may be right for this, too! If you are I’d be glad to help you learn the ropes.

Regardless of the FACT that marketers will tell you “$30,000 in 30 Days..Without a Website!” there is a basic truth.

You have to know which market you are going to serve.

You have to know the basics! And that includes simple websites. Blogs. Traffic generation.

Then you have to settle in and go to work.

The reason so many marketers hawk the idea that you can make tons of money right away, without a website, is because there are thousands of people everyday, desperate, surfing the net, needing money fast, and they don’t want to waste time learning the basics! They want to make money now!

They are in a bad position to commence study of a complex career.

But the basics are what get you there! it’s always been that way and it will remain that way.

It’s always interesting to note that the marketers that are saying you don’t need a website are using a website to tell you this. What an irony.

If you are one of the legions of people who need money fast and can’t be bothered to learn the basics…then I can’t help you.

Neither can anybody else. The difference is, some will say they can.

They’re scammers.

Maybe one in several thousand marketers can take a stone newbie from nowhere to rich in 30 days but I don’t know any of them. And I have never seen it done.

You see, in this business, like all others, you are rewarded for what you do (action) and not for just being there.

Don’t let that little slice of reality dissuade you! If you are smart and willing to work hard AND you like the idea…you can do it.

Whatever it is.

I’ve been writing this as if you are a good candidate for Internet Marketing (IM). But IM doesn’t cover only the subject of IM itself. (read that twice)

Internet Marketing covers the whole world and your life in it.

Picture yourself in a car on a nice day going down a typical commercial street. Can you see it? Look around as you move down the street.

What do you see? A fast food joint…an oil change outfit…a mall with clothing stores and a nice restaurant. Did you see a bookstore?

A bookstore sells information. It’s true that the information is sold in physical products but…the ratio of “other stores” to “bookstores” is just HUGE.

Like 99 to 1.

And it’s the same on the internet. Physical products and information products for markets such as “golf” “food” or “acne” are the vast majority of the things sold. Both in the Internet world and the real world.

Consider that for a moment. Where is your best opportunity?

Is it in the small slice of the market? Or the big hunk? Well, consider this…markets are divided up into small niches. Mini markets if you will. There are thousands of them.

And one of them is probably just right for you. Don’t you wish you knew which one it was? Or maybe you do.

In any case don’t for a minute despair! What a waste of energy that is!

There are known ways to to sort out which way will suit you the best.

Google is a great place…just go to the search bar and type in the keyword you think is best for you. Look at the results. If you feel your offer is as good as most or better then you only have a few more things to think about…like “getting on page one of the Google search page results for your keyword. But that’s a whole other topic.

Another great place to find out what’s hot is good old ebay. They even have a what’s hot and whats not list and trend analysis.

Even the mistakes you make in this area will be positive ones, since the positive results you are aiming for, with both staff and customers, will become apparent in short order. 1. Start at home: In addition to discussing customer treatment and teaching employees how to communicate, business owners need to demonstrate the same traits that they are trying to develop in the staff. Employee awards, recognition, weekly “debriefings” and even departmental meetings are ways and settings in which these attitudes can be exhibited. Even a simple “thank you” can go a long way in building positive attitudes in your staff. 2. First serve, then sell: These days, customers are both smart and well informed, and they do not take well to strong sales tactics. Doing business with your firm should not be an adversarial experience. Pleasant, efficient and personalized service will win their loyalty, so be service-minded, not sales quota oriented. 3. Centralize your data: You will not get that important “360-degree view” of your customers without an easily accessible, centralized database. Speak the customer’s language: One of the magic words for engendering loyalty, of course, is “value.” You need to understand what your customers’ definition of the word is, so that you can deliver what they expect. These definitions may be changing in a particular customer’s mind all the time, but investing in some research (your own or someone else’s) will help you stay abreast of the evolving meaning of “value” in your customers’ minds. 6. Be responsive: Good service is seen by most customers to include a large portion of responsiveness, so timely handling of orders and quick solutions to problems are essential. It is impossible to stay abreast of a large customer base without the latest tools, so use chat, e-mail, phone trees, FAQ web pages and everything else you can think of to address the customer’s desire for quick response time and timely answers. 7. Hunt down customer complaints: Some research suggests that only one in ten complaints are fully expressed by your customers. The remaining 90% are “unarticulated” and can show up in a lot of negative ways, such as unpaid bills, credit card reversals, obnoxious treatment of your frontline representatives and, worst of all, bad “word of mouth” (and, with the Internet, “word of mouse”). You need to head the bad news off at the pass, you might say, so you should not just make it easy for customers to voice complaints, you should solicit feedback of all kinds. Use online questionnaires, random phone calls, e-mails and other methods. 8. Use every channel to serve every customer: If you can exhibit the same level of good service to customers in the store, on the website or over the phone, research suggests that your customers will develop deeper, longer-term loyalty than those who are served through a single channel. You must attain, and maintain, a level of consistency, so you need to provide your staff the tools to “know” the customer wherever they encounter one. This involves service training, of course, but also ties back in to tip #3, above, which recommends you have a centralized database accessible from all company departments and locations. 9. Regain lost customers: Again, the research is clear. You have twice the chance of selling again to lost customers as to a prospective one. If you are not mining your records to go after these customers, you are ignoring a rich source of additional revenue for your firm. A lost customer is most emphatically not a “lost cause,” and with average firms losing 25-35% of their customers annually, programs for customer acquisition (and retention) are not covering all the bases. You should invest the time to win back those customers, as you will make long-term “value customers” out of a good number of them. 10. Give your contact center staff the skills they need: More and more companies have a “frontline” that is not just a call center, but a “contact center.” This department brings together all of the contact channels - web, e-mail, phone, chat, etc. - for greater efficiencies of both performance and operating costs. These employees needs to be able to write a letter, navigate the firm’s website, be articulate on the phone and use the “tech tools” you have provided for them. After giving them the tools, train them in the skills, too. 11. Identify “loyalty stages” and proactively move customers through them: Loyalty is built “one step at a time,” so you need to be aware of where your customers are in that continuum. Understanding your customers’ present loyalty stages will help you determine what’s required to move them to the next one. Management gurus speak of “six stages of customer loyalty”: (1) suspect, (2) prospect, (3) first-time customer, (4) repeat customer, (5) client and, finally, (6) advocate.

2) You can’t blog on whatever you think is “cool” and build a large audience.

You need focus. If you are already famous, you might be an exception. If you’ve got millions of raving fans, yes, you can blog on whatever you want and they’ll read it. However you’ll never build millions of raving fans this way. So you will need to pick a focus for your blog and stick to it in order to succeed.

3) You’ll never quit your day job to blog.

Less than 1% of bloggers will do it fulltime and professionally, and those that do will spent time on blog related activities you might not consider “real blogging,” like dealing with advertising, joint ventures, creating info products, and more — i.e. the business stuff. Blogging can be a business, whether you blog fulltime for yourself, as a paid staff writer for a blog network, or even if you just make a few extra bucks from your own blog.
